Free Music Sunday: Vampire Weekend – White Sky

Two years ago, Vampire Weekend [m] [w] took the world by storm with their self-titled debut album.  Advance buzz from outlets such as Rolling Stone and Spin (who put the band on its cover before their album was even out) certainly helped to fuel the fire, but it was the band’s sound, blending African popular music with Western classical music that carried the interest and helped Vampire Weekend live up to the hype.

On Tuesday, the band releases its long-awaited and highly anticipated followup album, Contra.  Like Vampire Weekend, Contra has had a substantial amount of pre-release buzz.  One of the advance tracks – released in October – managed to snag the 4 spot on Stereogum’s list of most-downloaded MP3s for 2009.  Nevertheless, the choice track this week is a tune that debuted way back in 2008, just a day after the release of album number one.  “White Sky” has since made appearances elsewhere, notably on Jimmy Fallow last March.  With the album’s imminent release, we’re now getting to hear how the band envisions the song coming out of the studio, and my take here?  It’s pretty sweet!

That’s right… I said it’s pretty sweet.  And that’s the long and short of it.  Go get “White Sky” from IndieRocker.net and enjoy!

  1. If you buy the new VW album and the new Spoon album from Amazon.com, they will give you two dollars off of each. I wound up ordering both for a mere $11.98 combined.
