Free Music Sunday: Bishop Allen – The Ancient Commonsense of Things

Brooklyn is the center of the indie rock universe.  I can’t say for certain, but with the number of bands coming out of the borough, it seems like you couldn’t walk down Flatbush Ave. without tripping over a singer or a drummer.  Want to know who the latest buzz band is?  Find out what’s going on in Brooklyn and you’ll know.

Bishop Allen is actually the third artist featured in Free Music Sunday to hail from Brooklyn.  I didn’t plan it that way, they’re just everywhere.  Anyway, Josh (also from Brooklyn) got me into Bishop Allen’s first full length album a few years ago.  Charm School was a fun and interesting little album, but somehow it seemed like the band was holding something back… like they recorded it while trying not to wake the neighbors.

On their new album, Grrr…, the sound is more unchained and exuberant.  It’s still a tight sound, but this time around, it sounds like they don’t mind if you turn the volume up a little bit.  “The Ancient Commonsense of Things” is certainly a track you won’t mind turning up either.  It’s an absurdly catchy song… radio-friendly, really, with a title chorus that you’ll absentmindedly find yourself singing as you walk down the street or fold the laundry or whatever.  It’s fun!  Go download it now from Stereogum and enjoy!
